King Carl Gustaf reveals name and title of Madeleine's baby boy

June 17, 2015

Two days after Princess Madeleine of Sweden welcomed her baby boy, the Swedish royal family have revealed that Madeleine and her husband, Chris O'Neill, have named the little one Nicolas Paul Gustaf.

The little boy's grandfather King Carl XVI Gustaf announced the name choice just after 5pm local time on Wednesday at a cabinet meeting ahead of the Swedish parliament's final sitting before its summer break.

He also revealed that the prince had been given the title Duke of Ångermanland, a province in northern Sweden.

Shortly afterwards, the information was also shared in a post on the royal family's Facebook page.

Nicolas was born on Monday 15 June, and weighed 3,080 grams, measured 49 centimetres and, according to press officer Margareta Thorgren, had his father Chris' chin.

Midwives also reported that Anglo-American banker Chris shed tears of joy as he cut the umbilical cord.

Royal watchers were surprised by the spelling of Nicolas, with Niklas being the more common Swedish name. The young royal's middle name Paul honours Chris O'Neill's father Paul Cesario O'Neill, who died in 2004, while Gustaf is a traditional name taken by the male members of the royal family.

The royal family's official Facebook page also shared the first picture of Nicolas on Tuesday, showing the baby boy peacefully sleeping.

Madeleine, 33, spent the first night bonding with her newborn son in hospital, but the pair, who welcomed their first child, daughter Princess Leonore in 2014, are now at home and returning to life as a foursome.

Princess Leonore met her baby brother on Tuesday, with Chris revealing afterwards that Leonore thought "he was a doll".

Little Nicolas will now be sixth in line to the throne after his aunt Crown Princess Victoria, cousin Princess Estelle, his uncle Prince Carl Philip, his mother, and Leonore.

To mark the royal baby's arrival a series of 21-gun salutes were fired by soldiers on the Stockholm island of Skeppsholmen and other military locations around the country.

Among the first visitors who were pictured arriving at the Danderyds Sjukhus hospital in Stockholm were Madeleine's parents King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia.

The royal couple were all smiles and no doubt thrilled to meet the newborn prince, who is their first grandson and third grandchild.

Before entering the maternity ward on Monday, King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia gave a cheerful wave to photographers.
