Prince Henrik of Denmark sets off for his first day at school

August 16, 2015

With a big smile on his face, and a brand new red bag on his back, little Prince Henrik of Denmark set off for his very first day at school on Friday. The sweet six-year-old – the son of Prince Joachim and Princess Marie – happily posed for photographs with his proud parents outside the family home in Copenhagen in honour of the special occasion. Also taking part in the family photo op was Henrik's little sister Princess Athena; the three-year-old still has some way to go before she too will be attending school. The royals' beloved dog, Apple, a Bichon Frise, also joined in the fun, appearing in the background of some of the pictures.

Prince Henrik sets off for his first day at school, his proud family by his side

Prince Henrik is attending the private Catholic school, Sisters of St Joseph, just a short distance from his home. To help ease them in, the new students were only required to attend for two hours on their first day, and could bring their parents along with them – Henrik was accompanied by Joachim and Marie, and his little sister. Nevertheless, the young royal came prepared, setting off with a large backpack."I have a pencil case and a lunch bag in my schoolbag," he told the waiting press. "I like arithmetic the best."

Henrik and Athena are Joachim and Marie's only children; the prince – the younger brother of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark – also has two children, Prince Nikolai and Prince Felix, from his first marriage to Alexandra Christina, Countess of Frederiksborg.Earlier this year, the royal couple whisked the four youngsters away on a family skiing break. Enjoying time off from their official duties and taking advantage of the school holidays, Joachim and Marie couldn't have looked happier as they spent time on the slopes with their energetic brood in the Swiss village of Villars.
