Prince William and Kate meet Jackie Chan with Chinese president

October 21, 2015

The morning after the lavish state banquet, Prince William and Kate met up with China's President Xi Jinping and Madame Peng Liyuan for a second day of engagements. The Chinese leader and his wife are on a four-day visit to the UK and were given a ceremonial welcome by the royal family on Tuesday morning.

Wednesday's activity called for the group to meet at Lancaster House in central London to attend the "Creative Collaborations" exhibition. The engagement was to celebrate the cultural ties – both existing and future – between the UK and China.

Mr Xi Jinping wasn't the only notable VIP from the Far East in the room. Hong Kong-born Jackie Chan greeted William and Kate and their visitors and posed with the group for a photo.

The royals and the politician were also met by a giant panda mascot from the animated film Kung Fu Panda, and were treated to a showcase by Merlin Entertainments. The group later met some of the cast from Poldark, the period drama starring Aidan Turner, who were present in full costume.

An extract from popular West End musical Matilda was also performed for the Duke and Duchess, while in another room, William and Kate and the Chinese president were shown a Tardis and a dalek from Doctor Who.

As President of BAFTA, the Duke also presented the politician with a specially commissioned artwork on behalf of the film organisation.

Kate, who wore a striking red Jenny Packham gown at Tuesday night's state banquet, looked regal in a purple lace Dolce & Gabbana knee-length dress. The Duchess wore red the night before in a nod to China's national colour, but on Wednesday, Prince George's mum matched her husband William, who wore a purple tie.

Madame Peng, who is a renowned contemporary folk singer back home, looked just as elegant in a pale brown dress and dark coat.

At Tuesday's state banquet, the Queen gave a speech in which she spoke about the relationship between the UK and China.

She also touched on her grandson William's first visit to China in March of this year – the first time a senior royal had made the visit in nearly 30 years. William's aim was to promote relations and business partnerships between the two countries.

"Like myself and Prince Philip, [William] visited not only your great cities of Beijing and Shanghai but also the beautiful province of Yunnan, and saw at first-hand the strong connections which bind our two countries together, be they in culture, education or business," said Her Majesty.

"Mr. President, the relationship between the United Kingdom and China is now truly a global partnership. We have much reason to celebrate the dynamic, growing economic relationship between our countries as well as our success in working together to address pressing international challenges."

During William's tour of China he opened the Great Festival of Creativity in Shanghai – a business exhibition that showcases British companies in the hope of enticing future Chinese business partners.

The Duke, who called the exhibition a platform for Britain's "thriving creative sectors", also took part in a series of cultural engagements. He visited the Shanghai Film Museum, participated in a football coaching event at a local high school, and walked the red carpet at the premiere of Paddington.
