The Queen's 150 favourite outfits to go on display to celebrate her 90th birthday

October 30, 2015

The Queen is offering royal enthusiasts the chance to get a glimpse at 150 of her favourite outfits to mark her 90th birthday in April. A selection of Her Majesty's most-treasured outfits from her childhood to the present day will go on display in the biggest ever public collection of her possessions.

Called Fashioning a Reign: 90 Years of Style from The Queen's Wardrobe, the exhibition will chart significant events in her life through the contents of her wardrobe, including both ceremonial and military attire as well as ensembles worn to family celebrations over the years.

The Queen's wedding to Prince Philip, Coronation and official state visits will also be represented, although it has not been revealed which exact pieces will go on display.

The collection will be showcased in three separate exhibitions, with the first launching at the Queen's Scottish residence, the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. The second will go on display as part of the annual summer opening of the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace in August 2016, while the final exhibit will take place at Windsor Castle in September.

The Royal Collection Trust have confirmed that the contents of each exhibition will be selected to match the venue in which they are hosted. While the display in Edinburgh will include traditional tartan outfits sported by Her Majesty, Windsor Castle will house items including childhood fancy dress costumes worn by then Princess Elizabeth during family pantomimes.

Meanwhile the display at Buckingham Palace will "show the unique requirements of royal couture", with a mix of historical items including iconic designs from Sir Norman Hartnell and Sir Hardly Amies.

The exhibition is not the only special thing planned to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday; it was announced in July that The Mall in St James' Park, London, will be transformed into the biggest street party ever to celebrate Her Majesty's milestone birthday.
