Prince William and Kate 'safe' after earthquake tremors felt in India

April 13, 2016

A 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar on Wednesday evening, with tremors felt as far as Bangladesh, Bhutan and India. Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, neé Kate Middleton, are on the last day of their tour of India before they set off for Bhutan on Thursday.

The Duke and Duchess felt the tremors during their stay in Assam, north-east India, where they are visiting the Kaziranga National Park.

A royal spokesperson confirmed: "As far as I know, tremors were felt across the region and everyone is okay."

While Kensington Palace's official Twitter account has not made any mention of the quake, royal reporters who are covering the tour gave updates online.

The Duke and Duchess and their party are safe and sound as well as members of the press, who are staying in Guwahati, the largest city in Assam. Various reporters said they felt strong tremors shortly after checking into their hotel.

There have been no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The United States Geological Survey, a scientific agency that studies natural hazards, says that India's neighbouring country Myanmar is "one of the most seismically hazardous regions on earth". The agency also recorded the epicentre as being approximately 240 miles north of Myanmar's capital Naypyidaw.

While earthquakes appear to be fairly common in the country and its surrounding area, the tremors will no doubt have come as a shock to William and Kate. The couple have so far been enjoying a colourful tour of India, starting in Mumbai and ending at the Kaziranga National Park.

Earlier on Wednesday the Duke and Duchess embarked on a safari adventure, where they had the chance to feed adorable baby elephants and rhinos.

Kate, who had admitted that she was missing her children Prince George and Princess Charlotte, took a particular shine to little Dunga, the smallest and newest resident at the rehabilitation centre. She was sweetly pictured rubbing the rhino's neck as he tipped back his head to get every drop of milk.

Carrying on with their royal tour, William and Kate will arrive in Bhutan on Thursday morning, where they are due to meet the king and queen.
