The Queen's personal Twitter account has changed – find out the new handle

April 25, 2016

Ever since it launched in 2009, the Queen's personal Twitter account has used the name The British Monarchy. However royal fans will no longer find the account under the same name as its handle has been changed to the very fitting The Royal Family.

The account is operated by members of the Queen's office and provides updates, pictures and videos from Buckingham Palace about the work and activities of the monarch and her family.

Over the years it has amassed 2.19 million followers.

The Queen sent her first tweet in 2014

While the Twitter account was opened years ago, it wasn't until October 2014 that the Queen sent her first ever tweet. The 90-year-old was opening a new gallery about communications revolutions at the Science Museum in London when she typed out the message from a tablet.

"It is a pleasure to open the Information Age exhibition today at the @ScienceMuseum and I hope people will enjoy visiting. Elizabeth R," she wrote.

While the Queen's Twitter account handle has changed, her Instagram account, which has 371,000 followers, is still The British Monarchy.

The nation celebrated Her Majesty's birthday on Thursday

Her Majesty has always been one to embrace modern technology and has been using a mobile phone since 2001, when her son the Duke of York gifted it to her and taught her how to use it.

Her grandsons Princes William and Harry also showed the Queen how to send and receive text messages.

The Queen hosted the Obamas for a post-birthday luncheon on Friday

While she has never made a phone call on it in public, the monarch, who is computer literate and also owns an iPod, is understood to use her phone while she is outdoors at Balmoral and Sandringham Estate.

The Twitter change comes shortly after the Queen turned 90 last week. She marked her milestone birthday with a series of celebrations and engagements, including a luncheon with the Obamas on Friday and a private dinner at Windsor hosted by her son Prince Charles.

The royal family are generally well connected to the cyber world. Prince Andrew has his own Twitter account, while Prince William, Kate and Prince Harry share personal Twitter and Instagram accounts under the name Kensington Royal.
