Prince Amedeo of Belgium and his wife Princess Elisabetta left the hospital on Friday after welcoming their first child, a baby girl. The couple were in good spirits as they smiled for the cameras before taking their newborn daughter home for the first time.

The couple confirmed that they have named the little archduchess and seventh-in-line to the throne Anna Astrid, and Prince Amedeo spoke outside the hospital about how much he was looking forward to raising their baby girl.

He said: "It's something new for us. We're a little nervous but it's fantastic. It's a new life that begins."

The couple looked happy and relaxed as they posed with their newborn, who was sound asleep in her mother's arms while wrapped up in a white baby blanket and dressed in a white cardigan with a matching hat.

A palace spokesman revealed the origins behind the name, saying: "Everyone is very happy. The little girl was named after her grandmother Anna on her mother's side, and her grandmother Astrid on her father's."

The sixth-in-line to the throne and his wife announced the arrival of their daughter on Tuesday, with the Belgian royal palace making an announcement on Facebook. It read: "Prince and Princess Amedeo of Belgium have the great joy of announcing the birth of their daughter, born at 3:30am at the Saint-Pierre University Hospital in Brussels. Their families are thrilled by the news."

"The new princess… weighed 3.3kg and measured 52 centimetres."
