How do Princess Mary and Kate's Vogue photoshoots compare?

Comparisons are often drawn between the Duchess of Cambridge, née Kate Middleton, and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, and now the stylish royals have something else in common – a starring role on the cover of Vogue magazine.

Princess Mary features in the August issue of Vogue Australia magazine with an exclusive family photoshoot and interview. Meanwhile the UK edition of the fashion magazine is believed to have seen a huge rise in sales when Kate graced the cover of the June issue celebrating the publication's 100th anniversary.

So how do their magazine covers compare? While Kate opted for a casual and relaxed look for her photoshoot, which was shot in the Norfolk countryside in January, Princess Mary's cover is arguably more glamorous.

The mother-of-four wears a black gown and dazzling tiara for the cover image, which sees her walking arm-in-arm with her husband Crown Prince Frederik. With smoky eye make-up and delicate drop earrings, Mary's appearance is very different to Kate's low-key magazine debut.

The Duchess of Cambridge said that she wanted her photoshoot to reflect a rarely-seen element of her private life, with the snapshots showing her in the countryside near Anmer Hall, the home she shares with Prince William and their two young children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Kate's family didn't join her on the shoot, whereas Princess Mary and Prince Frederik gave a glimpse at their home life with their children Prince Christian, Princess Isabella and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine in one fun image.

With children's toys, a bowl and teapot lying on the table, they appear just like any other young family rather than royalty in the playful and relaxed shot.

The Danish royals were captured by Mario Testino for their Vogue shoot – the photographer chosen by Prince William and Kate to shoot a number of special family occasions, including Princess Charlotte's christening in July 2015.

However he did not photograph Kate for her first ever magazine photoshoot; the Duchess requested that the Vogue commission was given to a British photographer "for whom this would be a new opportunity", with London-born Josh Olins selected for the job.
