The Queen receives bag full of toys for Prince George and Princess Charlotte

July 7, 2016

The Queen is used to receiving bouquets of flowers and cards from well-wishers, but this time she got quite a surprise when a member of the crowd gave her an entirely different gift; a bag full of toys to give to two of her great-grandchildren, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

The Queen looked amused as she received the shopping bag full of gifts while greeting the crowd in Dundee on Thursday. Her Majesty was visiting Scotland to open Slessor Gardens at the V&A Dundee Community Garden when she was handed over the carrier bag. The presents given to her by a lady were from B&M Bargains, a discount store, and were handed over on the instructions that the Queen should give them "to George and Charlotte."

The Queen was given a bag of toys on her trip to Dundee

The bag included a Baby Sophie doll worth £4.99 and a Toy Story-themed present.

Residents of Dundee were quick to good-naturedly joke about the unusual gift, with one tweeting: "This made my day. A woman in Dundee hands a @bmstores bag with kids toys inside to HRH the Queen. Hope George enjoys," while another wrote: "Only in Dundee would someone give the Queen a plastic bag full of toys for George and Charlotte."

A spokeswoman for B&M said: "We've been unable to establish if the Queen is a regular customer, but the photo taken suggests the gesture might have taken her slightly by surprise – who knows she might become a regular shopper."

The royal family are used to receiving gifts for the children, and Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall were similarly given a sweet but unusual present of two Wales football shirts for the little Prince and Princess during their visit to Wales earlier this week. The couple posed with the shirts, which had 'Prince George' and 'Princess Charlotte' printed on the back.
