Danish royals send greetings from Iguazu Falls on the way to Rio Olympics

August 1, 2016

Prince Joachim and his wife Princess Marie of Denmark paid a visit to the world-famous Iguazu Falls while travelling en route to the Rio Olympics. The couple stopped at the border of Brazil and Argentina with their children Prince Henrik and Princess Athena, and Joachim's two sons from his first marriage, Prince Nikolai and Prince Felix.

A photo was posted on the Danish royal family's Instagram page, showing the group-of-six posing in front of the magnificent waterfalls, the largest waterfalls system in the world.

The royals were all smiles with the youngest member of the family, four-year-old Athena, looking particularly sweet as she perched on a railing in between her mum and older half-brother Felix.

The photo was welcomed by royal watchers, who only really get a glimpse of Joachim and Marie's young children at official engagements or at larger family photocalls.

Joachim's older sons Nikolai and Felix also divide their time between their parents, as the prince and his ex-wife Alexandra Christina, Countess of Frederiksborg, have joint custody of the teens.

The couple will attend the Rio Olympics opening ceremony on Friday

The family have made their way to Rio where Joachim and Marie will carry out their first engagement on Tuesday. They will join Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary at the opening of the Danish Pavilion and on Friday the royals will again reunite for the Olympics opening ceremony.

Over the weekend Joachim and his French wife Marie were in Sao Paolo where they attended a luncheon followed by a gala dinner, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Danish-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce.

On Thursday the couple will also be guests of honour at a concert by Danmarks Radio's Danish National Girls' Choir. Along with Prince Frederik and Princess Mary, Joachim and Marie will attend various Olympics events, with fans hoping that their children will make an appearance.
