The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are set to visit Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly on 1 and 2 September, Kensington Palace has revealed. Prince William and Kate, who are unlikely to travel with their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte, will meet local organisations, businesses and charities.

The couple will also visit a number of Duchy of Cornwall projects, which fund the public, charitable and private activities of William's father Prince Charles.

William and Kate are "very much looking forward to visiting Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly", the statement on Twitter added.

The trip will undoubtedly hold a particular interest for the royal couple.

William's father Prince Charles became the 24th Duke of Cornwall on the Queen's accession to the throne, and the Duchy of Cornwall is one of two royal duchies in England. It extends across 23 counties in England and Wales, supporting various projects.

In Cornwall, Truro city and Newquay town have Duchy-involved schemes. William and Kate will gain an introduction into some of the schemes, starting their mini Cornish tour at Truro Cathedral.

The couple will then head to the picturesque Isles of Scilly, an archipelago made up of over 200 rocks and islands that have been part of the Duchy since the 14th century.

They will visit St Mary's island to see gig rowing, the quay extension and the famous Tresco Abbey Garden, followed by a stop at St Martin's island to visit a flower farm.

Aides say that the trip will be a "good chance to find out more and meet local people" as they will be named the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall one day, when Charles ascends the throne.

Their visit to Cornwall will precede their official royal tour to Canada in the autumn, where fans are hoping George and Charlotte will join their parents.
