"Hi girls, well done, congratulations you're in the final," said Sophie. "This is everything that you've worked for. It's fantastic and I'm so proud of you.

"I'll be watching tomorrow night. I'm just so sad I can't be with you but I'm there in spirit. Good luck, take care, I hope everybody's okay from last night and... Bring it home. Well done!"

In her BBC Sport column, goalkeeper Maddie Hinch wrote: "We enjoyed celebrating after the semi-final but we're not about to sit on our laurels or think it's enough. In the form we're in and the way we've performed, we want the gold even more.

"We want to show what we are about, and the fact we've played well means we are confident. We have no fear and we're excited about how we can play."

Sophie, who is married to the Queen's youngest son Prince Edward, will be watching the game on home soil. She is currently spending the summer in the Scottish Highlands with the Queen and other members of the royal family, including her husband and their two children Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn.

Princess Anne is the only member of the British family who travelled to Rio for this summer's Olympics. She did so in her capacity as a member of the International Olympic Committee, and returned after a ten-day trip last week.
