Princess Beatrice has become the first royal to complete a triathlon.

The 28-year-old, who joined Richard Branson and his two children Sam and Holly, took part in a gruelling expedition to raise money for Big Change, a charity which she co-founded.

Taking to her Twitter page on Thursday, the royal shared a picture of herself after completing the mammoth marathon on the tip of Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy.

"After swimming 3,300m biking 140km, running a half marathon and hiking up mount Etna I finally made it," she wrote alongside the image.

The expedition saw Beatrice cycle to the southern tip of Italy, swim to Sicily, mountain bike her way to the foothills of Mount Etna before finishing with a run to the summit of the infamous volcano.

Shortly after completing the Virgin Strive Challenge, the eldest daughter of Prince Andrew and his ex-wife, the Duchess of York, said she hopes the money raised will young people "to thrive" after finishing their school education.

Beatrice told the Press Association: "The dyslexia battle is something that everyone goes through every day but I hope that in the future we can create a place where it doesn't matter if you've got dyslexia or if you don't - where the school environment is a safe and secure place for young people to thrive, not just in exams.

"It's about ensuring that young people have the tools that they need to be able to take on work and life and education and families - that all rolls into one."

This year's challenge is double the distance of the last challenge undertaken in 2014, which raised over £750,000 for Big Change.

So far, they have raised nearly £1,000,000 for Big Change which supports UK youth projects.
