Princess Beatrice accidentally left a cut on Ed Sheeran's face while jokily knighting James Blunt with a ceremonial sword at a party.

According to reports, the Princess went to 'knight' the You're Beautiful singer after he joked he wanted to become a 'Sir', but didn't realise that Ed was stood directly behind her, causing him to nick him on the cheek as she swung the ceremonial sword over her shoulder. The 25-year-old singer was taken to hospital to get stitches, and although one source told The Sun that the star "could've been blinded", the Thinking Out Loud singer was in good humour about the accident. He has since been spotted sporting the cut on his cheek while posing for snaps with fans.

Princess Beatrice was reportedly "very upset"

The source continued: "The blade cut into his face and it was just a few inches from his right eye… Ed really played it down. Everyone was totally shocked and apparently Beatrice was very upset. But Ed was the perfect gentleman and told her it was just an accident.

"Obviously the princess was upset and everyone was talking about it, but she and Ed spoke about and everything was fine. She did nothing wrong except mess around at a party and her friends, including Ed, all told her that." The Twittersphere went into a frenzy regarding the incident, with one person joking: "Why on earth didn't she use a Blunt sword?," while another cheekily added: "Does that now make him a cut above the rest?"

Ed was in good spirits after Princess Beatrice accidentally cut his face

This is not the first time Ed has been put in an awkward spot with the royal family! Margot Robbie admitted she mistook Prince Harry for Ed Sheeran during a Christmas party. She told The Sun: "I thought I was hanging out with Ed Sheeran. I was thinking 'Ed's a really cool guy. I'm going to take some pictures with him. Everyone now thinks if they come on a night out with me in London they'll bump into Prince Harry."

She revealed on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon that the Prince was "offended" by the mistake, joking: "When I saw him in those glasses, I was like, 'Oh my god, I didn't know Ed Sheeran was at the party!' And he got really offended."
