From Prince William and Kate's royal tour of Canada with their children, to Prince Harry's action-packed trip to the Caribbean, 2016 was certainly a busy time for the British royals! Now, as the new year gets underway, Kensington Palace has celebrated by sharing some of the royal trio's highlights from the past 12 months, in a sweet photo montage on Instagram.
"Some of our @instagram highlights from 2016," read the accompanying caption. "Thank you for an amazing year, and look forward to sharing more incredible moments with you in 2017! #2016bestnine." The snaps are part of a 'Best Nine' post, a popular trend on Instagram which sees users create a montage of the photos which garnered the most likes when first posted on the social media website.

It was a particularly special year for the royal family, who celebrated the Queen's 90th birthday, and some of their biggest moments were captured on camera - for example, in one photo William and Kate can be seen with their children watching Trooping the Colour on Buckingham Palace's iconic balcony.

Another photo which was popular with royal enthusiasts is a striking portrait of the Queen revealed earlier this year, which sees the monarch surrounded by her five great-grandchildren and two youngest grandchildren, while little Princess Charlotte sits on her lap.
The youngest royals feature quite heavily in the highlights round-up, with their own portraits proving to be a hit. George looked as adorable as ever in photos taken for his third birthday, one of which sees him playing with the Cambridges' pet dog Lupo. Meanwhile, little Charlotte melted hearts as she played and smiled in a sweet moment captured by doting mum Kate.

As ever, it was a jam-packed year for William, Kate and Harry, who travelled abroad on a series of royal tours. William and Kate headed to Canada with their two children, arriving to cheering crowds as they touched down in Victoria. No doubt the trip was memorable for George and Charlotte, who attended a fun children's party – and George was seen cuddling up to dad William in an adorable father and son moment.

Meanwhile, Prince Harry spent some time abroad raising awareness for a series of projects close to his heart. In May he headed to Florida to cheer on the teams participating in the Invictus Games, where he met with crowds of fans who turned out for the sporting event. A few months later, Harry headed to the Caribbean, visiting the region on behalf of the Queen. During a visit to Barbados he met pop star Rihanna, and the pair took a live HIV test to mark World Aids Day.
