Princess Diana to be remembered on National Kindness Day

February 21, 2017

Princess Diana will be remembered in a fitting tribute in March. The Diana Award have announced that this year's National Kindness Day will take place on Friday 31 March to commemorate the 20th anniversary year of the death of Prince William and Prince Harry's mother. For the third year running, the charity will be holding the event to encourage people across the UK to do something kind for someone else – and this year's acts of kindness will be in remembrance of Diana in a celebration of her values of compassion, kindness and service to others.

The charity hopes to inspire around 20,000 tangible acts of kindness from members of the public throughout 2017, which they will be logging on a specially-created website. The Diana Award is also set to partner with various organisations to celebrate National Kindness Day.

It's not the only way Diana's legacy will be celebrated this year. Her brother Earl Spencer will be hosting a special exhibition at Althorp, her ancestral home, which will feature inspiring stories of young people who are 'Walking in her Shoes' alongside a fundraising gala for the Diana Award in June.

Meanwhile, at the request of her sons Prince William and Prince Harry, a statue of Diana will be erected in the grounds of Kensington Palace, to mark the 20th anniversary of her tragic death in a car crash on August 31. The Princes have set up a committee to commission and privately raise funds for the monument, which will be placed in the palace's public gardens. The Diana, Princess of Wales, Statue Committee includes one of Diana's sisters, one of her closest friends and one of William and Harry's most trusted advisors.

"It has been 20 years since our mother's death and the time is right to recognise her positive impact in the UK and around the world with a permanent statue," read a statement from William and Harry. "Our mother touched so many lives. We hope the statue will help all those who visit Kensington Palace to reflect on her life and her legacy."
