Fast asleep in his mother Kate's arms, Prince Louis was unaware of the fuss he was causing among his godparents, family members and royal watchers the world over. Louis, who is Prince William and Kate's third child, celebrated a big milestone on Monday – his christening. The youngster was baptised at the Chapel Royal of St James's Palace in London and was as good as gold during the 40-minute ceremony. He looked simply adorable on what was his second public appearance, being carried into the chapel by his mum Kate.

The tiny Prince officially made his debut on 23 April, when he was just a few hours old. At the time, Kate presented her son to the waiting press, royal fans and well-wishers who had camped outside the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital in Paddington.

Monday's event was a much more private and intimate affair. At eleven weeks old, Louis was christened in front of his godparents and loved ones. The Prince is the second to newest member of the royal family, after Meghan Markle, who officially became a Duchess upon her marriage to Prince Harry in May. Louis is the Queen's eighth great-grandchild and is fifth-in-line to the throne, after Prince Charles, Prince William, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Prince Louis was the star of the show on Monday, looking absolutely precious in his mother Kate's arms. The tiny tot, who is 11 weeks old, wore the same frilly, cream gown that many royal babies before him have worn, including his siblings Prince George and Princess Charlotte. The robe is a replica of the intricate lace and satin dress made for Queen Victoria's eldest daughter in 1841.

The original cream lace and white satin robe was last used in 2004 and is too delicate to be worn. The new robe, worn by Louis, was created by the Queen's dresser Angela Kelly.

The Duchess, who gave birth at the end of April, looked as proud as punch at her son's christening. Kate was radiant in Alexander McQueen as she cradled her son. She was heard describing her sleeping boy as "very relaxed and peaceful". The Duchess added with a smile: "I hope he stays like this."

Louis was christened at the Chapel Royal of St James's Palace – the same venue where Prince George was also welcomed into the Christian faith in October 2013. Most recently, Prince Harry's wife Meghan Markle was baptised at the chapel in March, two months before her wedding.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby, conducted the service.

He was baptised using holy water from the River Jordan, in the ornate silver gilt Lily Font – part of the Crown Jewels. The font is decorated with lilies and ivy foliage around the rim and features three cherubs around the base, while the main bowl is a large lily bloom.

Louis was as good as gold during the 40-minute private ceremony. His family and his six godparents – Mr. Nicholas van Cutsem, Mr. Guy Pelly, Mr. Harry Aubrey-Fletcher, The Lady Laura Meade, Mrs. Robert Carter and Miss Lucy Middleton – were in attendance and were the first of the party to arrive. Everyone wanted to coo over the royal baby, including Louis' grandparents Carole and Michael Middleton, his aunt Pippa, who is pregnant with her first child, and his uncle James.
