The news comes as the UK endures its third national public lockdown, with schools and all non-essential shops closed throughout the country and the highest daily death toll being recorded on Friday.

The Queen has been isolating in Windsor Castle with her husband Prince Philip for much of the past year. Her son, Prince Charles, contracted coronavirus in March and suffered from mild symptoms. He isolated for seven days while wife Camilla, who did not test positive for the virus, quarantined herself for 14 days in line with medical advice.

The monarch has been vocal about the pandemic, touching upon the matter in each of her most recent addresses to the nation.

On NYE, the royal grandmother even posted a series of photos from the past year – which will be remembered in history books as a year plagued by the pandemic - including one of her and her husband celebrating their 73rd wedding anniversary by reading a card from their great-grandchildren, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Another image showed the iconic Round Tower at Windsor Castle covered in blue light to thank the NHS staff for their dedicated work during the pandemic, and a third was of the Queen and a quote from her address to the nation displayed at Piccadilly Circus in April.

Captioning the photos, Her Majesty reassured royal fans that there are "better days to come", writing: "We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return: we will be with our friends again; we will be with our families again; we will meet again” - Her Majesty The Queen.

"Wishing you all a Happy and Healthy New Year."
