The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge headed to Starbank Park in Edinburgh on Thursday morning to hear about the work of Fields in Trust, a charity which protects green spaces in Edinburgh.

It’s an organisation close to Prince William's heart, having taken over the patronage from his late grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, in 2013.

During their visit, William and Kate met with local volunteers who have transformed the park over the last seven years, and spoke with local families, nursery groups and Duke of Edinburgh Award participants.

The couple showed off their gardening skills as they helped nursery children to plant seeds good for butterflies on a nature trail in the park.

Thursday marked the final day of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's tour of Scotland.

William, 38, began the week-long visit alone last Friday, in his role as Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Kate, 39, then joined her husband in Scotland on Monday.

William donned a navy suit and jumper ensemble, while wife Kate donned a repeat forest green Massimo Dutti blazer with trousers and a new polka dot blouse from Jigsaw. The £45 top has already sold out, but Boden offers a similar style for the same price.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, were unable to accompany their parents on their trip to Scotland.

But Kate made sure her children were never far from her mind as she sported a new Daniella Draper necklace with 'G' 'C' and 'L' - her children's initials.

The couple also met teenagers working towards their Duke of Edinburgh's bronze award who were planting sunflowers.

Green-fingered Kate was pictured wearing gardening gloves as she helped the youngsters to plant the seeds.

The Duchess co-designed the Back to Nature garden for the Chelsea Flower Show back in 2019.

William and Kate chatted to families who use the park, including new parents Natalie Randamy, 31, her partner, Rory Stewart, 29, and their nine-month-old daughter Penelope Stewart.

The Duchess cooed at the baby as she and William reminisced with the couple about their own children at the same stage.

"We were just talking about Penny sleeping through. They were reminiscing about nine months being a bit of a game-changer for them," Ms Randamy said. "Kate was saying Charlotte has the same dress from Next as Penny but just in a bigger size."

The Duke and Duchess then joined local schoolchildren in a youth session run by the Lawn Tennis Association, of which Kate is Patron.

William and Kate joined a class from Canal View Primary school at Craiglockhart Tennis Centre in a set of exercises from the LTA Youth programme including hopscotch, floor tennis and team cones.

LTA Youth is a new and inclusive junior programme for children aged 4-18 created to help make tennis accessible to as many children as possible. The programme includes the first national curriculum for tennis ever written, drawing on world leading expertise and informed by both athlete development principles and insight from parents and players.

The Duchess is an avid tennis fan and has reportedly taken lessons at London's exclusive Hurlingham Club in the past.

Kate has also been a regular at the Wimbledon tennis tournament over the years and she became patron of the The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) in 2016.

Once again, the Duke and Duchess were put in rival teams.

William laughed in delight when a shot by Kate hit the net and for the second day running won a sporting contest against his wife.

As they arrived, William asked Olly Scadgill, participation director at LTA: "How are you bringing on a new Andy or Jamie Murray?"

Kate added: "The thing is with children is to give them confidence. You don't need a fantastic tennis court and greatest kit, it's about making tennis accessible to all kids."

The Duchess swapped her polka dot blouse and blazer for a repeat Ralph Lauren cricket jumper, first worn during a trip to Northern Ireland in 2019.

The Duchess of Cambridge kept her promise to a little girl who wanted to meet a princess dressed in her favourite colour pink.

Kate proved true to her word when she invited little Mila Sneddon and her family to the Palace of Holyrood - the Queen's official Edinburgh home - and wore an ME+EM outfit that matched the five-year-old's dress.

The outgoing little girl, who is battling cancer, has captured the Duchess' heart – and when they met she told the youngster she wanted to give her a "big squeezy cuddle".

Mila was featured in Kate's lockdown photography project, Hold Still, and the photo showed her kissing her kitchen window as her father stood outside.

The Duchess first spoke with the first girl during a telephone conversation last year when she made her promise to wear a pink dress when they met in person.

"Hi Mila, look at you. I want to give you a big squeezy cuddle, it's so nice to meet you in person," Kate said.

She told Mila: "I love your dress, can you do a little twirl – and your shoes."

For her sweet meeting with Mila, Kate chose to wear Me + Em's £450 Colour Block Silk Shirt Dress in bubblegum pink.
