Princess Diana is set to be recognised on what would have been her 60th birthday. Her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, will mark the bittersweet occasion by unveiling a statue that was commissioned to honour her legacy.

The memorial by Ian Rank-Broadley was delayed because of the coronavirus outbreak, and will subsequently be unveiled in the Sunken Garden of Kensington Palace on Thursday.

Before Lady Diana Spencer married Prince Charles, her family had strong links to the royal family.

Her father, John Spencer, 8th Earl Spencer, had worked as an equerry for King George VI and a young Queen Elizabeth.

The Queen herself had been guest of honour at John's wedding to Frances Roche at Westminster Abbey on 1 June, 1954.

Both of Diana's grandmothers had served as ladies-in-waiting to the Queen Mother, Elizabeth II's mother.

Here both Diana and Prince Charles were in great spirits as they joked with the Queen during an appearance at Clarence House for the Queen Mother's 87th birthday on 4 August 1987.

Princess Diana was among the members of the royal family who had gathered on the balcony of Buckingham Palace for the Trooping the Colour in June 1989. Here, she was pictured having a laugh with the Queen's late sister Princess Margaret.

Diana had previously spoken of her appreciation of Princess Margaret, who had welcomed her to the family from day one.

She told royal author Andrew Morton: "I've always adored Margo. I love her to bits and she has been wonderful to me from day one."

The Duke of Edinburgh's relationship with the mother of his grandchildren has been widely reported on. The late Prince Philip would have understood the pressures that were bestowed on Diana when she entered the royal family as an outsider.

Here in 1986, Princess Diana is seen kissing Prince Philip on the cheek as she arrived at the Royal Society of Arts.

Sarah Ferguson and Princess Diana were the best of friends – always spotted out and about together at events, from the Royal Ascot to the Buckingham Palace balcony for Trooping the Colour.

Talking to the Daily Mail in 2018, Sarah said of their friendship: "I thought of absent friends and family; of Diana – but she's with me all the time. What I miss most is her tinkling laughter."

She added: "Diana was my best friend and the funniest person I knew. She had such a timing and wit. It was a total joy to be with her because we just laughed and enjoyed life so much, and I know she would have loved the wedding."

Diana had grown up playing with Prince Charles' brothers, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, at the royal residence in Sandringham, near the Spencer family home in Norfolk.

She was known to having a close friendship with Prince Charles' siblings.

In 1990, Diana was greeted by her brother-in-law Prince Andrew outside Portland Hospital whilst visiting Sarah following the birth of Princess Eugenie.
