Meghan's mother Doria Ragland speaks for the first time

Speaking publicly for the first time since her daughter began dating Prince Harry in 2016, Doria reveals: "The last five years have been challenging" adding that she's "ready to have my voice heard".

She also recalls the moment she met Harry, describing him as "really nice" and commenting how the couple looked "really happy".

Doria reveals what Meghan was like as a child

As previously unseen images from the Duchess' childhood are shown, Doris also reveals what Meghan was really like as a child describing her daughter as congenital, empathic and very mature. 

Mother and daughter also revisit Meghan's former childhood in Los Angeles.

When their romance was unveiled in 2016, the Duke claims that members of the royal family asked Meghan should be "protected" when they questioned newspaper headlines about her – including "Harry's girl is (almost) straight outta Compton". 

He said: "The direction from the Palace was don't say anything.

"But what people need to understand is, as far as a lot of the family were concerned, everything that she was being put through, they had been put through as well.

"So it was almost like a rite of passage, and some of the members of the family were like 'my wife had to go through that, so why should your girlfriend be treated any differently? Why should you get special treatment? Why should she be protected?'

"I said 'the difference here is the race element'."

Meghan recalls racist incident in childhood

During one emotional moment in the episode, Meghan recalls a frightening incident from her childhood. 

She said: "We were in the parking lot leaving and my mum honked her horn at this woman who was taking a long time to figure out how to get out.

Meghan's mother Doria speaks out publicly for the first time

"The woman screamed the N word at my mum. I just remember the grip her hands had on the steering wheel. You could see, so tight where all the knuckles get all white.

"She was silent the rest of the drive home. We never talked about it. I had never in my life heard someone say the N word."

Meghan and Harry share previously unseen images of Archie and Lilibet

Episode two also features some adorable private photographs of the Sussexes' children, Archie, three, and one-year-old Lilibet. 

Family snapshots include baby pictures, as well as photos of Meghan cuddling Archie in the car and reading to her young son.

Prince Harry opens up about Prince Charles and Princess Diana's divorce

Meghan said: "There’s so much from anyone's childhood that you bring with you into the present. Especially when you're the product of divorce."

Harry added: "What's most important to the two of us is to make sure that we don't repeat the same mistakes that perhaps our parents made.

"I think most kids who are the product of divorced parents have a lot in common, no matter what your background is.

“Being pulled from once place to another or maybe your parents are competitive, or you’re in one place longer than you want to be or in another place less than you want to be. There's all sorts of pieces to that."

Meghan recalls the moment she met Prince William and Kate

The Duchess of Sussex said she found the "formality" of being in the royal family "surprising".

Recalling the moment she first met her brother and sister-in-law, Meghan said: "When Will and Kate came over, and I met her for the first time, they came over for dinner, I remember I was in ripped jeans and I was barefoot.

"I was a hugger. I’ve always been a hugger, I didn’t realise that that is really jarring for a lot of Brits.

"I guess I started to understand very quickly that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside.

"There is a forward-facing way of being, and then you close the door and go 'You can relax now', but that formality carries over on both sides. And that was surprising to me."

Harry and Meghan reveal the story behind his proposal

Speaking about their engagement, Harry said: "I wanted to do it [propose] earlier but Because I had to ask permission from my grandmother, I couldn't do it outside of the UK. I did pop a bottle of champagne when [Meghan] was roasting a chicken and that kind of slightly gave the game away."

The night Harry proposed to Meghan 

The documentary included photos from the night Harry proposed to Meghan in their walled garden at Kensington Palace, surrounded by 15 electric candles.

The episode also includes audio of Meghan excitedly calling one of her friends, to whom she says: "It's actually happening!"
