Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary are expected to join Queen Margrethe on the balcony, along with their four children – Prince Christian, 17, Princess Isabella, 15, and 12-year-old twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.

Frederik has been acting as his mother's regent during her recovery from her hospital procedure.

It's not known if Prince Joachim and his wife, Princess Marie, will also reunite with the rest of the Danish royals on Sunday.

The couple, who currently reside in Paris with their children, Count Henrik, 13, and Countess Athena, 11, are set to move to Washington DC in the US this summer.

A statement revealed that the royal would "take up a new position under the Ministry of Defense as defense industry attaché at the Danish Embassy in Washington DC, where the Prince, as Denmark's representative, will in the coming years help to strengthen the defense industry cooperation with the USA and Canada".

The announcement about Joachim and Marie's move comes just months after Queen Margrethe stripped four of her grandchildren of their royal titles.

The decree, which came into effect on 1 January, meant that Nikolai, 23, and Felix, 20, - Joachim's children with first wife Countess Alexandra - and Henrik and Athena are now titled Count or Countess of Monpezat.

The decision caused major controversy within the family – with Margrethe later taking the unprecedented step of apologising to Joachim and his children.
