The Queen had extra reason to celebrate at the Royal Windsor Horse Show on Thursday. Not only was she attending the first day of the event after it was cancelled on Wednesday due to severe flooding – but she also managed to bag herself a free Tesco gift card.

The royal was presented with the voucher after her horse won at the show, and the 90-year-old monarch was clearly ecstatic about the win.

She inspected the gift card and grinned from ear-to-ear as she perhaps mused about what she could buy.

The Queen and Prince Philip were stepping out for the first day of the show. It was due to commence earlier in the week but because of severe flooding it was cancelled.

Fortunately for the royals, the show went on and Her Majesty, who is patron, eagerly made her way to the grounds of Windsor Castle on Thursday morning.

Clad in a gilet, blouse and skirt, her trusty wellington boots and a floral headscarf, the royal drove herself to the event.

Her first stop was at the Copper Horse Ring where she watched a class take place. Over 100 showing classes are staged each year, with the majority held in this ring.

The royal, who still regularly rides, was on good form and looked thrilled to be back at the show. Prince Philip, 94, was also pictured exercising his horses as he drove a carriage around the grounds.

Later a parade of 900 horses and 1,500 participants will be staged in celebration of Her Majesty's 90th birthday.

The show, which is running from 12-15 May, is held to celebrate the Queen's love of horses and tells the story of the monarch's life from her birth in 1926 to her coronation and reign spanning more than 60 years.

A member of the royal family will attend each evening of the pageant, and the Queen will be the guest of honour on the final evening, which will be broadcast live on ITV on Sunday.

The finale will be hosted by Ant and Dec, with an impressive line-up of stars including Katherine Jenkins, Kylie Minogue and Jess Glynne.

Around 10,000 people, including the Queen, were expected to attend the show's opening day on Wednesday, but waterlogged fields which would have been used as car parks were deemed unsuitable.
