The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry all joined the Queen to host the Olympic and Paralympic heroes at a special reception at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday evening.

Kate oozed heaps of glamour in a striking floor-length white Alexander McQueen gown, which was emblazoned with patriotic red poppies. Her luscious brunette tresses were left loose over her shoulders in gorgeous curls.

Prince Harry greeted the sporting stars with his trademark charm and humour. "He just hugged me!" said swimmer Ellie Simmonds (pictured).

The Queen looked splendid in green as she was introduced to Team GB and Paralympics GB medallists.

The Queen, who previously praised the Team GB squad for the "magnificent" performance in Rio, hosted a similar celebration after London 2012.

Harry, 32, was a hit with the women of Team GB's hockey team, reeling off jokes and showing off his fun side during the a reception.

"Prince Harry described me as a crab and was impersonating me!" said goalkeeper Maddie Hinch. "He's big on the bants and the banter. He'd definitely fit into our team and in the locker room!" she added..

The British royals even got to meet boxer Nicola Adams, who claimed a gold medal at Rio this year.

Kate looked delighted as she chatted to the Rio 2016 star athletes alongside her husband, Prince William.

Kate opened up about her young brood to equestrian triple-gold medallist Natasha Baker, who said: "I asked her how the children were and she said Charlotte is really enjoying her riding which is great to hear and I said we may see her here on a line-up in 20 years time."

Although Kate, William and Harry were not able to attend the events in Rio this summer, they did record a video wishing the athletes the best of luck at the games.

"Our athletes are an inspiration to us all and we need the whole country to get behind them and cheer them on as they take to the world stage," said Harry. "We have some of the most passionate supporters in the world and we can't wait to cheer on our athletes together this time in Rio," added William.

The Queen happily spent time speaking to the stars of the Rio 2016 Games as the Royals hosted a special reception for the medal winners on Tuesday evening.
