Kate Winslet's surprise 2003 wedding to Oscar-winning American Beauty director Sam Mendes took place in exclusive Anguilla, in the West Indies archipelago off southernmost Florida. While details of the wedding continue to be under wraps, the beachside nuptials are understood to have taken place at Barnes Bay on the southwestern tip of the island.
The couple is believed to have rented one of the spectacular beachfront Temenos villas – the name of the trio of secluded coastal mansions, which each start at around £22,000-a-week, means "sanctuary" in Greek. Here the pair combined a no-fuss wedding and a romantic getaway. The sparkling white villas each feature a meditation area, outside dining pavilion and marble-framed "infinity pool”.
A marriage license in Anguilla, which costs around $150, requires just 48 hours notice, making it perfect for the happy pair, who wanted an ultra-private ceremony far from the eyes of the world. In fact, the only guests at the low-key affair were three close friends and the bride's two-year-old daughter Mia.
