Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway began a three-day visit to Thailand by exploring the treasures of exotic Bangkok. The royal couple, who are special guests of Thai King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit, have taken up residence within the Grand Palace.
Sporting a cool turquoise short-sleeved shirt and white skirt, the princess was clearly fascinated by the ornate historic buildings as she accompanied her husband on a tour of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. They did not have to travel far to visit the elaborately decorated Chapel Royal, as it is located within the compound of the Grand Palace. The chapel is famous for a sumptuous statue of Buddha that is an object of national veneration.
The Norwegian royals have a full few days ahead of them, with an agenda that will include an exploration of the fabled ancient city of Ayutthaya - the nation's historic capital for some four hundred years. Later this week, they will also travel two hundred kilometres south of Bangkok to the royal palace in Hua Hin. There they will be received in audience by the Thai King and Queen.
The royal visit is part of festivities marking the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Norway and Thailand.
