Carmen Electra got a chance to show off her bellydancing skills when she jetted into Morocco this week. And the former Baywatch star, who was visiting the country for a fashion shoot, also had a close encounter with some strikingly-dressed horsemen.

In recent years Morocco has become one of Africa's most popular tourist destinations. With a fascinating mosaic of African, Arab and Berber communities, it offers a feast of possibilities for culture vultures. And those who are more inclined to do a bit of sun-worshipping are also more than catered for, with miles of unspoilt beaches.

The north African nation has a reputation for mystery and romance too. The city of Casablanca, which will need no introduction for movie fans, is the country's largest and most modern metropolis. Home to the spectacular Royal Palace and the Hassan II Mosque, this is also the place to head for if you want to check out some Moroccan nightlife.

Further inland you'll find the historic town of Fez, one of the most impressive medieval cities in the Islamic world, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, while the equally beautiful Marrakech lies to the south.

Morocco is also a land of contrasts. An excursion into the desert will give visitors first-hand experience of the majestic Sahara, while the Atlas mountains offer some top-quality ski resorts.
