Jersey’s magnificent beaches come in all shapes and sizes, but the Atlantic Hotel overlooks the biggest of the lot – the five-mile sweep of St Ouen’s Bay. You should be able to spend plenty of time on it, too, as the island has one of the sunniest climates in the British Isles. One of only two five-star establishments in Jersey, the recently renovated hotel has added a contemporary twist to its classy design.
Eminent modern artists were commissioned to help decorate the new Ocean Restaurant, which opened earlier this year to rave reviews, its produce sourced from local markets, farmers, and fishermen. And with a heated pool, tennis court, and championship golf course on the doorstep, plus an indoor pool and health club, there’s plenty to do even if the weather is too breezy for the beach.
Out and about: Jersey was occupied by German forces during the Second World War and this year sees the 60th anniversary of its liberation. The Queen attended the main celebration on May 9, but other events will take place throughout the year. The island covers only 45 square miles but it packs in the attractions – including excellent shopping in the bustling capital St Helier, where many goods are cheaper than on the mainland.
Mount Orgueil is Jersey’s most famous landmark – dine beneath it at sunset if you’re looking for the ultimate romantic setting. You can also visit potters, flower growers and weavers – the traditional wool jerseys that last a lifetime have been made here for 400 years.
And Bergerac star John Nettles isn’t the only celebrity associated with Jersey. Last year’s visitors included Lionel Richie, Natasha Bedingfield, Katie Melua, Anastasia and Nigel Mansell.
