After hosting the showbiz 'wedding' of the year, Elton John and David Furnish were recovering from all the excitement with a honeymoon in Venice. The couple, who formalised their 14-year relationship by becoming civil partners last week, were spotted enjoying a motorboat cruise along the canals of the romantic Italian city.

"They've been together a long time, but they were just like a couple of love-struck teenagers," said an onlooker. "They seemed to be having a whale of a time."

For the ceremony in Windsor Guildhall, the high-profile pair had chosen sober black suits. But on holiday their liking for flamboyant attire came to the fore, with Elton in an emerald green suit and a pink tie, while David was wearing eye-catching tartan trousers.

Later the newlyweds went for a stroll across the world-famous Saint Mark's Square. Then it was time for some shopping in the area's exclusive stores and lunch at Harry's Bar, the favoured haunt of Ernest Hemingway, as well as celebs such as Nicole Kidman, Helen Hunt and Woody Allen.

The break also included a visit to the historic La Fenice opera house, where the pop star plans to perform another one-man show after his acclaimed 2003 concert. "It's still the greatest theatre in the world," he declared.
