Famous faces soak up the charms of Italian isles

After attending the wedding of her best friend Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts was probably in the mood for romance. Just as well beau Liev Schreiber was there to keep the King Kong star company during a break on the Italian island of Ischia.

Once targeted by Barbary pirates, these days the volcanic isle is the favoured hangout for a hip cosmopolitan set, drawn by its pine-dotted landscape and trendy nightclubs.

By day the Australian actress and her New Yorker boyfriend could be seen cruising the harbour in a boat with friends. Later that evening Naomi swapped her brown and white striped bikini for a cool white summer dress and the couple headed out to Ischia's Global Film And Music Fest.

Meanwhile, over on the island's north western coast Diane Kruger, who succumbed to Orlando Bloom's charms in Troy, was soaking up the sun. The German actress was recharging her batteries in the town of Lacco Ameno, home to the historic spa resort of Regina Isabella.

Rounding off the celebrity contingent in the Mediterranean was fashion maestro Giorgio Armani, who was vacationing in Sardinia. The 72-year-old cut a svelte figure as he dined in Porto Rotondo, where some of the world's most beautiful yachts are moored, including his own vessel Mariu.

The Italian isle's most dazzling asset is its 1,148 miles of coastline, which features a combination of stunning beaches and huge, limestone rocks resembling modern art sculptures. And its hundreds of grottoes, lagoons, rocky inlets and caves are transformed into jewel-like pools by the Tyrrhenian Sea, which sparkles in myriad hues under the hot Mediterranean sun.
