With spectacular homes in Madrid and Mallorca, King Juan Carlos is accustomed to spending his time in breathtaking environments.

Even Spain's head of state must have been impressed when he went along to the unveiling of a stunning new hotel in the north of the country this week, however. The new hostelry, which is located in the Marques de Riscal winery just outside the Basque village of Elciego, is a stunning, architecturally innovative creation that has made headlines around the world. It is the work of renowned Canadian architect Frank Gehry, the force behind the equally awe-inspiring Guggenheim Museum in nearby Bilbao.

"It's a marvelous creature, with hair flying everywhere, which launches itself over the vineyards," said the proud designer as he shared a toast with the gathered dignitaries. His latest creation, at the heart of Spain's legendary Rioja wine-growing region, will host visitors indulging in "wine-therapy" getaways, with prices ranging from £200 to £1,000 a night.

Of course, sensational architecture isn't the only thing the northern territory has to offer. The Basque Country's second city, San Sebastian, is considered one of Europe's most beautiful destinations, while the region's sleepy fishing towns and beautiful beaches also make it a popular destination.
