In the driving seat at Ferrari World, Abu Dhabi

Recession? What recession? That certainly seems to be the question over in the United Arab Emirates where the new Ferrari theme park has just opened in Abu Dhabi. It's the first of its kind that celebrates the internationally renowned Italian sports cars, and a true paradise for Formula 1 fans.

If you're a Formula 1 fan, and never miss a race when Fernando Alonso's behind the wheel, what could be more fun than a theme park packed with attractions celebrating  the world of motorsports? The new Ferrari World theme park in Abu Dhabi, the first to be opened by the legendary brand, offers a chance to discover the history, culture and technical innovation of Ferrari, and to experience the F1 passion and thrill first hand.

The new theme park is located just half an hour from Abu Dhabi airport and 50 minutes from Dubai, under an impressive sleek red roof, inspired by the classic double curve of the side profile of the Ferrari GT body that covers 200,000 square metres and carries the largest Ferrari logo ever created. Inside, in a public area of 86,000 square metres – that's as big as seven full-sized football pitches – are a score of attractions. There's the world's fastest rollercoaster where you can experience an acceleration to 240 kilometres an hour in under five seconds, and a G-force simulator, which uses a 62 metre tower to simulate what a pilot feels like in control of a “prancing horse” from the Ferrari stable.

Visitors can also try out advanced racing simulators, take a driving course, or visit the Ferrari museum, which is home to cars from different stages of the Italian firm's past. Ferrari World also has two luxury restaurants offering cuisine from the Maranello region, as well as a traditional Italian restaurant where pizzas are made on the spot. And, of course, there's a good time to be had just browsing the gift shops with their full range of souvenirs from Ferrari and the world of motorsports.

All set to be a major tourist draw, the Ferrari World is part of Yas Island, a 25 square kilometre natural island separated from the mainland by a narrow channel. Two more theme parks are planned for the island – a Warner Bros. Park and a Water Park – as well as several hotels, residential villas and golf courses, in addition to the Formula 1 circuit and marina it already boasts.
