Leonardo DiCaprio is the latest in a long list of celebrities to treat himself to a Palm Springs estate worth £3.1million. The Wolf of Wall Street star has bought a six-bedroom house in the desert resort, nestled beneath California's San Jacinto Mountains, which has been renowned for its Hollywood playground status since the 1920s when the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Kirk Douglas, Elvis and Cary Grant owned hideaway homes there.

The desert oasis, famed for its Hollywood legacy, Native American heritage and huge collection of mid-century modern architecture, was also a favourite hang-out of iconic stars like Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor.

Leonardo, who caused a Twitter frenzy last month when he lost out on an Oscar to Matthew McConaughey – the fourth time the Hollywood star has missed out on the accolade – has gone for a 1.3-acre desert dwelling in the Old Las Palmas neighbourhood of Palm Springs.

The Modernist showplace boasts a whopping 7,022 square feet, floor-to-ceiling glass walls, wooden ceilings, a massive stone fireplace, a swimming pool and, of course, a sunken bar in the living room. Including staff quarters, the retreat offers six bedrooms and, according to reports, 7.5 bathrooms (we’re as confused as you by the half). The renovated 1963 estate designed by famous architect Donald Wexler may well serve the 39-year-old as a long-term abode – he recently announced plans to take a break after his role in

The Wolf of Wall Street – and this Palm Springs home would make for the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of showbiz.

Situated just two hours from Hollywood, the desert playground with year-round sunshine, blue skies and stunning natural beauty famously attracted the Rat Pack back in the 1920s because of the legendary 'two-hour rule' of Hollywood Studios, which stated that actors under contract had to be within two hours from the studio.

Leo's recent purchase comes just a few months after selling one of his beach houses in Malibu. Along with the house left in LA's beach city, he also owns a property in the Hollywood Hills and, for when he's in the Big Apple, a Manhattan Eco-friendly penthouse.

While tucked away from the razzle dazzle of Hollywood, annual festivals like Palm Springs International Film Festival and Coachella will mean plenty of A-listers will be in town.
