When in Rome! Sofia Vergara has been enjoying a fun-and-food filled holiday in Italy judging by her Instagram account. The Modern Family star has jetted away for a European holiday with "one of my favourite people" - not husband Joe Manganiello – but her friend Franz Serrano Evers.

Sofia has been keeping her fans updated every step of the way, showcasing the delicious Italian meals they've been tucking into along with their sightseeing at tourist hotspots including Villa Borghese Gardens and Trastevere. After their arrival on Sunday, Sofia and Franz got their holiday underway in the best possible way; by sampling an array of local cuisine including pasta, bread and gelato washed down with red wine. "This is what happens when you have dinner in Rome," she laughed as she showed off their extravagant dinner in an Instagram video.

Sofia also shared a photo of herself and Franz looking happy as they sat side by side in a restaurant, adding the caption: "In one of my favourite cities with one of my favourite people @franzserranoe #roma." She later revealed that she was inappropriately dressed for the cobbled streets of Rome, wearing a pair of black platform heels. "As usual I'm wearing the right shoe for walking around Rome #waitformeeeee," Sofia joked.

It appears Sofia traded in her heels for something a little more comfortable to go sightseeing the following day, wrapping up in a padded coat, T-shirt and jeans to explore more of the city's landmarks including the Tiber river, and tuck into more traditional Italian cuisine including pizza and tiramisu. And the 44-year-old certainly appears to be enjoying her trip, telling her 12.1 million Instagram followers she felt "blessed" to be waking up to views across the city.

However her husband Joe hasn't been too far from her mind; Sofia posted a photo of her partner at the premiere of his new film Smurfs The Lost Village on Sunday, adding a series of heart emojis.
