He's one of the world's most famous fashion designers, and now Karl Lagerfeld has turned his hand to interior design to showcase his "personal vision of French chic and modernity" at an iconic Parisian hotel. The Chanel creative director has decorated two signature suites, called Les Grands Appartements, as part of a recent £150million renovation at Hôtel de Crillon.

The hotel dates back to the 18th century and first opened its doors in 1909, quickly establishing itself as a favourite among celebrities and royals alike; Madonna, Charlie Chaplin and Queen Sofia of Spain are just three of the former notable guests.

And now Karl has added his own stamp to the hotel with his opulently designed suites. The 83-year-old, who is an authority on 18th century antiques, appears to have followed a more-is-more mantra when it comes to designing the rooms, with marble bathroom suites, huge crystal chandeliers and plush velvet sofas among the standout features

STORY: The best things to see and do in Paris this summer

Every detail of the suites has been carefully thought out; the living area has carved wooden walls that were painted seven times and then sanded down to create an impeccably smooth surface, while a red marble fountain from the hotel's original courtyard has been renovated and reused as a sink.

Karl has also found a special way to pay homage to his pet cat, Choupette, with photos of the pampered feline on the walls in one of the suites, along with graphic cat scratches on the specially woven carpet.

As well as relaxing in the suite, which comes with a butler service, 55 inch television and a personal bar, visitors will also be able to take advantage of all that the hotel has to offer. Amenities include a spa, hair salon, two restaurants operated by Michelin-starred chefs and three bars. Hôtel de Crillon is also located in an enviably central location on Place de la Concorde, close to both the Champs Elysées and the Tuileries.
