Treat yourself to a really special meal at Fifty Cheyne

A night out at No. Fifty Cheyne really is an indulgent treat. Dinner in the dining room feels as if you were being invited into a swanky Chelsea home for a Christmas meal - but while intimate, elegant and superbly posh, this is also comfortable and cosy. The food is quite simply stunning - the scallop starter was the best we've had. And the grill, built into the huge fireplace in the main dining area, has something for everyone. Exec chef Ian Smith has created a menu which suits all tastes, with steaks, chicken, fish and vegan options available. And quite literally everything we tried was out of this world. The Chateaubriand to share is a luxury, the fish, lighter but equally mouth-watering. Not to mention the puddings; don't, whatever you do, miss out on the white chocolate souffle. A perfect festive treat.

Enjoy fine dining in the heart of Borough Market

There are many things that are exceptional about dining at Turnips in Borough Market. If you're not familiar with the name, they're a veteran greengrocer and wholesale retailer that also double up as a restaurant. Provenance and seasonality are key to the venue's ethos, so you can guarantee that each dish has been carefully crafted and great thought has gone into the ever-evolving menu.

When we visited for dinner, it felt like a real treat to be dining outdoors under the arches of London's iconic food market, when most of the other stalls had closed up for the day. The vibrant spirit of the market lingers at Turnips though, as chefs personally serve dishes to diners and talk through the theatricality of each beautiful plate. The occasional rumble of a train overhead only adds to the uniqueness of the setting.

The menu is the brainchild of Chef Patron Tomas Lidakevicius, formerly executive chef at Jason Atherton's City Social, so you just know it will be sublime. The tasting menu is the one to go for, comprising seven magnificent dishes, and the wine pairing is well worth it. It's hard to pick a favourite as each dish is original and unexpected, superbly presented and pure genius, but the melt-in-your-mouth wild venison, and the understated agria potatoes with black truffle, will always stick in mind. The menu may have some food you wouldn't ordinarily order, like cep and salsify, but you'll be blown away by the flavours and freshness of the market ingredients and Tomas' skill at combining them.

Turnips also has a special festive event in the calendar – a Christmas sitting on 23 December. Check it out online but if you can't make that date, find another slot in your diary because a visit to Turnips should be on every Londoner and tourist's bucket list.

Enjoy a pub meal with a difference at The Pig's Head

The Pig's Head in Clapham Old Town, which just opened five weeks ago, is a truly quaint spot for lunch or dinner and highly recommendable. The farm-to-fork restaurant is shaking up the pub game with half of its menu boasting plant-based dishes while the other focus is on sustainable, premium meat which is butchered on site and comes from local, family-run farms.

The menu changes daily and features intriguing and innovative dishes. When HELLO! visited, we sampled the exquisite pulled ewe served with beetroot, eggs, and crispy potato skins, as well as the chicken's leg with a bacon crust. For starters, try the delicious Paddock Farm Tamworth pork Scotch egg, served alongside bacon jam and Bramley apple mustard.

It's all about the little touches, like dining against a backdrop of jars of homemade pickled food or having your condiments hand-served at your table in mini jars. Even the sides like freshly made sourdough with whipped brown butter are excellent. Make sure you leave space for dessert and share the dark chocolate hot pot, which is topped with salted caramel marshmallows that instantly melt as soon as you dig your spoon in.

The setting feels incredibly homely too, with mismatched chairs and tables that have been upcycled or reused, and dainty crockery. It's easy to while away an afternoon at this rustic pub and well worth a visit, even if you aren't in the area.

Enjoy a walk through Eataly in Liverpool Street, where you can admire some pretty festive lights and a range of Christmas hamper goodies, from wine packages at Il Vino, to Italian cured meats. Plus, with plenty of restaurants and bars situated within the Eatly complex, you can stop for a tasty bite to eat.

From the beginning of December, limited edition dishes will be available the Eataly restaurants. We're talking dishes such as Christmas Stuffing Pizza at pizza alla pala, and Polenta with Mushrooms and Robiola Cheese. Sounds delicious, right?
