Best things to do in London in May

Explore the best of Carnaby, London's most vibrant destination

Don't let the tourist traps of Oxford Circus and Picadilly Circus put you off exploring the city's vibrant Carnaby, an eclectic hub of global fashion brands, independent boutiques, funky foodie spots, art installations and more. The pedestrianised area of Soho is as colourful and vibrant as it is practical and convenient, loaded with an exciting rock n' roll history of London's swinging 60s. Not sure where to start? Scroll on to discover how best to spend your day in Carnaby…

Upgrade your piercing game at Metal Morphosis

If spontaneity runs in your blood, you'll love a trip to Metal Morphosis to add a new piercing to your collection. This is the most professional body and ear piercing service on the high street, offering only the finest quality metals and the most extensive range of piercing and fashion jewellery. Whether you're a minimalist into mini studs or a maximalist queen looking to upgrade your ear party - Metal Morphosis is the place to do it.

Ugly Dumpling makes the ultimate lunch spot

Have you ever heard of a cheeseburger dumpling? Neither had we, until we tried it and instantly ordered three more. This street food-turned-restaurant is home to many a twist on the humble Asian dumpling. From aromatic duck to fragrant pork belly, aubergine parmigiana and mushroom and truffle, Ugly Dumpling is the perfect place to indulge in traditional Asian classics - or try a Western fusion. Load up on sides like the legendary crispy Tempura Aubergine, summery Beetroot Rice Noodles and Crunchy Slaw as well as the delicious Seaweed and Pickled Cucumber Salad to keep you satisfied. Delish.

Shop from independent stores

Carnaby is home to over 160 brands spanning fashion, beauty, lifestyle food and drink, so you'll never be short of things to do. If you're looking to update your wardrobe in true rock n' roll style, head to 'RS No. 9 Carnaby', an iconic store that features all of the hallmarks of The Rolling Stones and an exclusive fashion label with unique pieces.

Dine alfresco at Carnaby's iconic Kingly Court

Kingly Court is a bustling hub of culinary delights tucked into Carnaby's secret alfresco destination. Our favourite place to dine for dinner? Korean Dinner Party. The brains behind the menu are Ana Goncalves and Zijun who have created an eclectic mix of East-meets-West dishes, kitsch cocktails and craft beers with a niche record collection of Korean hip hop playing into the night - there's nowhere else quite like KDP in Soho. Highlights include the mouth-watering slow cook 48-hour beef short riba and garlicky 'chickn' nuggets.

Carry on your night at Cahoots

Cahoots is Soho’s underground home that transports guests back in time to post-war 1940s. Set inside an abandoned train station, the scoundrels of this station speakeasy serve up spiffing cocktails, jolly-good rations and live swinging entertainment seven days a week.

Have a royally good afternoon tea

Enjoy the royal treatment at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, within walking distance of Buckingham Palace. Sample the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Afternoon Tea at The Roseberry or a limited edition – and regally purple – The First Dance cocktail, created in honour of the Queen, who along with her sister Princess Margaret, learnt to dance in the hotel's ballroom under the watchful eye of society dance teacher Madame Vacani. Special celebrations also include a Michelin-starred "Royal Cooking" Menu by Heston Blumenthal, inspired by coronation banquets throughout history.

Take a picnic to Primrose Hill

North London grocer Melrose & Morgan is the best place to get your picnic supplies, and their picnic hampers have long been Primrose Hill's best kept secret - until now. Build your perfect bespoke picnic from their fresh artisan cheeses, charcuterie, seasonal frittatas, stuffed peppers, bacon & cheddar tarts, truffle crisps, home-baked lemon polenta cake, white chocolate & lime cookies, chocolate florentines, fresh strawberries and much more! When we say brunch, it's served from 12.30-5pm and includes a range of mouth-watering Indian sharing plates masterminded by critically acclaimed Chef Rohit Ghai. We're talking chicken buttermilk with pink peppercorn, ginger and curry leaf and Kerala prawn curry served with dal Muradabadi, rice and Paratha, finished off with Malpua Rabri, a pancake with flavours of pistachio and saffron. Wondering where the booze comes into play? Order one of their delicious cocktails – we highly recommend the mango and date bellini for something fruity, or the Sangam with chai spice-infused white rum and tandoori pineapple for a unique flavour.

Feast on an Indian bottomless brunch

We'll never say no to bottomless brunch. Kahani, the slick high-class Indian restaurant located off Sloane Square, is the place to go if you want top-notch Indian fare served alongside non-stop flowing prosecco. The three-course menu, which is £38 for food or £55 to add unlimited prosecco, is incredibly good value, especially given the venue's SW1 postcode. We've heard of bottomless drinks but at Kahani, you can order as much of the food as you want - although you really don't need to given the substantial portion sizes.

You'll start off with a spiced green pea cake, plus a chickpea dish, before moving on to lamb naan parcels and tandoori grilled chicken, both of which were the favourites on our table. The chicken thigh curry had a nice kick to it and was another stand-out dish, while veggie lovers will delight in the paneer curry and yellow lentil dahl. For dessert, it's an intriguing take on the traditional carrot cake as you're served carrot 'fudge' with vanilla ice cream. Overall, an outstanding brunch menu and well worth the visit.

Try a chicken burger fit for a Queen!

London’s favourite burger hotspot, Haché is set to launch a royally good burger in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – the Coronation Fried Chicken Burger (£15), available from 1st June – 31st August. The crowning jewel in the burger is the chicken – double dipped in Greek yoghurt and masala spices, tossed in curried flour and tandoori masala coating before being fried until extra crispy and topped with a classic coronation sauce. The chicken is placed on a throne of baby gem lettuce, lime, chilli and coriander, and finished with toasted almonds and a ciabatta or brioche bun crown. Taking inspiration from the dish created for Queen Elizabeth II at her coronation luncheon in 1953, this burger truly is fit for royalty. Available in all seven Haché restaurants (for dine-in and delivery) from Camden through to Clapham, the Coronation Fried Chicken Burger is the most delicious way to celebrate the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

The menu signatures include Chantal’s classic chocolate club sandwich with raspberry and Grenada dust and a white chocolate mousse crown with pistachio and cardamom - but our favourite was the chocolate-infused scones! Served up alongside an array of savoury sandwiches including sun-dried tomato and gruyere quiche, Severn Valley smoked salmon with olive tapenade and Burford brown egg, cress and mayo on a buttery croissant, it's the perfect afternoon treat.

Try a cocktail inspired by royal history

Sheraton Grand London Park Lane is celebrating the sunnier months with a brand-new floral drinks menu set to put a spring in guests' steps.  The menu of three exciting cocktails is inspired by the almost unbelievable tale surrounding King Charles II and the city’s iconic Green Park, which sits just a stone’s throw away from the five-star hotel. Rumour has it that throughout his reign, King Charles II would take the short walk from Buckingham Palace to Green Park to pick the gorgeous flowers blossoming in the green especially for his mistress. Upon hearing the news, his wife, Queen Catherine of Braganza, ordered all the flowers to be removed from the park, coining the familiar name ‘Green Park’. To this day, Green Park remains the only London park to be without planted flower beds. Impress your friends with *that* fact!  For the first time, Sheraton Grand London Park Lane will be bringing the flowers back to Green Park through the hotel’s exclusive floral drinks menu - so will you choose the ‘King Charles’s English Rose’ (English rose petals, Rose liqueur, maraschino, citrus and topped up with tonic), or the ‘Queen Catherine’s Revenge’ (yellow Absinthe, yellow chartreuse, apricot brandy and finished off with homemade marigold honey syrup)?

Choose your cocktail via your favourite colour

Yep - that really is as cool as it sounds! Fitz’s General Manager, Scott Gavin, has curated a menu of 14 cocktails which are all matched to a different treatment of the 1660 piece of art by Dutch artist, Jan Davidsz de Heem’s, ‘Vase of Flowers’. Guests are guided to choose the version of the artwork that captures their attention the most, and in doing so, they will also select the cocktail matched to it. You will then be handed a UV light pen, and are invited to illuminate the hidden meaning behind your selection and reveal a personality trait, reflected by your choice of artwork. The menu was inspired by Scott’s interest in colour psychology and the impact it has on food and drink choices. Warm colours like red, yellow and orange evoke stronger emotions such as love and happiness, and cool colours like blue, green and purple are linked to calmness and serenity. Colours can trigger states and emotions; hence they will influence choices – even when it comes to cocktails. We reckon it's perfect for a first date - your conversation will flow!
