Selfridges unveils stunning Christmas window displays

October 27, 2014

Christmas has officially started. If you've been trying to avoid it, the unveiling of Selfridges' Christmas windows on Thursday proves the festive season has well and truly begun. Having outdone themselves once again,  the theme of this year's windows focuses on the notion of storytelling. Each one features a nostalgic fairytale from your childhood, with a 'Selfridges twist', as Creative Director Linda Hewson put it. We can assure you they have not disappointed.

Selfridges unveiled the new window displays on Thursday

Think of your favourite childhood fairytale, then envisage it dolled up in Selfridges' style – Little Red Riding Hood's cape is custom-made by Peter Pilotto, and the golden woodland creatures around her are drowning in layers of dazzling and luxurious jewellery. Cinderella looks as though all her dreams have come true as she is surrounded by a beautiful array of designer shoes. Meanwhile,  Rapunzel has gone punk, with her infamous locks rebelliously dyed pink, as she rocks a striking Rodarte gown with utter elegance.

The displays feature famous fairytales given a 'Selfridges twist'

The famous story of Hansel and Gretel doesn't appear to have changed too much: they still have their iconic gingerbread house, but their style has been given a modern twist – Gretel is holding a skateboard – and the forest is now adorned with My Little Pony toys. We're sure that many children would love to be lost in that forest! In another window, Father Christmas appears to have ditched the sleigh and reindeers in favour of a red Mini, a map of London, and an entourage of glamorous women. This modern take on some of our favourite fairytales is truly enchanting to look at, and only took a mere 18 months from the idea to the final project. If only we had the time to recreate one in our homes.
