Mario Testino reveals top 3 tips for Instagram

March 25, 2015

When Mario Testino isn't busy photographing the world's biggest icons from Angelina Jolie to Kate Moss, he's dazzling his one million followers on his Instagram account with behind-the-scenes snaps of photoshoots and the industry's glitziest events. However, the 60-year-old recently revealed that he follows just a few simple rules for taking showstopping photographs.

Mario Testino has photographed the world's biggest stars from Rihanna to Blake Lively

"For me, it's all about capturing the moment," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "One always has to have their eyes open and their camera ready. "I also like to have fun with the person I am taking a photograph of, so what I'm really capturing is that moment between us, and the camera is not a barrier between that shared moment. "The Peruvian photographer, who has worked with stars including Cara Delevingne and Beyoncé, also suggested not focusing too much on the lighting or technical side of photography, but instead keeping an eye on your surroundings for amazing backdrops and moments you want to share with others.

Mario often shares photos of his close friends including supermodel Kate Moss

"Again, it's about that moment. It can be anything, though," he admitted. "Recently, when I was leaving London early one morning to catch a flight to LA, there was this most magical sky with this incredible light. So beautiful. "I photographed it and shared it because for me, I really felt it was something special that I was lucky to see and others might enjoy. A few minutes later it had changed. I guess, moreover than any technical aspect, it has to feel personal and authentic, regardless of what it is. "Any Instagram fan will know that the caption can be almost as important as the photo, but Mario doesn't necessarily rely on hashtags to get his photo circulating."One of the wonders of Instagram is that your images can reach anyone anywhere in the world," he said. "I'm Peruvian, so it's important for me to write in both languages. "Almost half of my followers are Spanish-speaking, and it's a little more work for me, but they appreciate it. They tell me so in the comments. Communication is key."
