Selfie sticks banned from Coachella

With less than two weeks to go before the first weekend of Coachella kicks off, the organisers of the musical festival have shocked fans by banning selfie sticks from the glitzy event. 'No Selfie sticks/Narsisstics' reads the tongue-in-cheek point on their list of prohibited items, found in their FAQ section.

Selfie sticks are attached to mobile phones and extend to different distances to allow the photographer to include more of their surroundings in their selfie, and have become hugely popular as the selfie continues to be a social media craze. Coachella, which kicks off next Friday, is notorious forits high fashion crowd and their colourful, retro-inspired stylish ensembles. The festival repeatedly creates a social media frenzy due to the constant glamorous posts being shared, causing fans to question why selfie sticks have been banned. Taking place in California, Coachella boasts star-studded guestlists which have seen the likes of Emma Watson, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Kate Bosworth and Alessandra Ambrosio all stepping out to enjoy the music and soak up the sun.

However, this is not the only festival to ban selfie sticks. The organisers behind festival Lollapalooza, also in California, have revealed that they too will be asking people to stick to taking photos on their phones. 'GoPro attachments like sticks, selfie sticks & monopods' have been added to their list of prohibited items. Fans took to social media to question the advantages of banning these items, and Lollapalooza answered from the brand's Twitter page. "For safety, to speed security checks at the gate & to reduce the number of obstructions between the fans and the stage," they said in reply to one fan's query.
