Emily Blunt's stylist on actresses being paid to wear designer clothes

June 2, 2015

Whether it's the Oscars or Golden Globes, Hollywood's leading ladies never fail to dazzle in the world's most beautiful gowns – and designers are keen to make sure it's their creations which are chosen. Emily Blunt's stylist Jessica Paster has revealed that actresses can be paid up to $250,000 to wear a specific gown for glitzy award ceremonies.

Speaking at the Vulture Festival's Hollywood Power Stylist Panel in New York alongside fellow celebrity stylists Brad Goreski, Brandon Maxwell and Erin Walsh, Jessica admitted that she has received $30,000 to $50,000 for choosing a certain outfit, while actresses can expect between $100,000 to $250,000.

"If it looks awful on you, $100,000 or $250,000 is not worth it," she said, talking about how celebrities decide what to wear for appearances. "But if it looks gorgeous and this is the dress you were going to pick anyway, why not get paid?"

"Let's not forget that when [designers] make these custom dresses, they're spending about $100,000," she continued. "So someone is getting paid."

Jessica, who has also worked with models including Miranda Kerr, went on to point out that there is often no written contract – celebrities have no obligation to wear specific brands, and if they ultimately choose a different gown, nobody gets paid.

However, she admitted that the deals, which she describes as "ambassadorships" can be beneficial for both parties as it cements a close relationship between the celebrity and designer, which can lead to the ultimate coup for stars – starring in a high fashion campaign.

"There is prestige to being an ambassador for a brand 100 per cent," agreed Erin, who has styled stars including Sarah Jessica Parker. "That's a goal for people."

"If you build out their looks in the right way, those campaigns will readily come to them," added Brad.
