Stella McCartney to design Team GB kit for 2016 Olympics

July 30, 2015

Stella McCartney will once again be designing the Team GB kit for the Olympics, set to be held in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. The designer, who is working as the Creative Director with Adidas for the project, confirmed the happy news with her 1.5 million Instagram followers.

The star celebrated the news with a throwback photo on Instagram

Stella shared a photo in honour of 'Throwback Thursday' in which she waves a Union Jack flag while standing outside the London Olympic Stadium during the games in 2012.

"1 year to go until #Rio2016!" she captioned the snap. "I am thrilled to be back as @adidasuk Creative Director for @teamgb for the next Olympics and Paralympics Games!! It is an honour to work with our great athletes again!! X Stella #TBT."

Paul McCartney's daughter was reportedly "thrilled" when asked to work on another collaboration for next year's sporting event.

"Stella was thrilled to be approached once again and said yes straight away," a source told The Mirror. "She is a big supporter of strong women, and wants to make the female athletes' kit feminine yet dynamic."

The 43-year-old was praised nationwide during the last Olympics for the chic ensembles she created for athletes from Sir Chris Hoy to Jessica Ennis-Hill.

At the time, she opened up about the design making process, citing the Union Jack as a natural starting point.

"The first place to start on a project like this is to look at the Union flag," she said. "For me it’s one of the most beautiful flags in the world and it was very important to me to try and use that very iconic image.

"But I think that it's so recognisable that I was able to dismantle it, break it up into different parts and different colour forms and then bring it all back together and bring it back into the flag."
