Sophia Webster unveils Barbie-inspired shoe collection

August 24, 2015

Sophia Webster has made all of our childhood dreams come true and created a shoe collection inspired by Barbie. For her highly-anticipated new range, the designer has created shoes for the iconic doll – and human-size version for fashionistas.

The Barbie by Sophia Webster collection

The Barbie by Sophia Webster collaboration marks an important step in the doll's history, as this is the first time that she will be given flat shoes – until now creators Mattel have always given her heels or wedges.

"Creating a shoe collection for Barbie has always been my dream project," said Sophia in a statement. "But getting to be a part of her embracing flats for the first time made it extra exciting, and deeply personal.

"I love that this concept strikes a balance between dreams and reality – the idea of getting Barbie in some hi-tops and setting her loose in East London instantly appealed."

Sophia has also created a limited edition Barbie doll

It's not just the adults who can rock their own version of Barbie's shoes – Sophia has also included children's sizes for the flat shoes so that mini fashionistas can also copy the look.

Alongside the dazzling range of footwear, Sophia has taken the collaboration one step further. Next month, the designer will launch a limited-edition version of the Barbie doll, which will be encased in a specially-designed box. The doll will also rock a miniature pair of Barbie by Sophia Webster Riko glitter hi-top trainers, which will also be available to fashionistas wanting to get their hands on a real-life pair.

It's not the first time that Barbie has inspired a designer. Last year Jeremy Scott sent an army of real-life Barbies down the runway for Moschino, with crop tops, miniskirts, bows and tons of references to the iconic Mattel toy.

The Barbie by Sophia Webster collection will launch in Selfridges nationwide and on the designer's website on Thursday 27 September.
