Caitlyn Jenner responds to those Vanity Fair-inspired Halloween costumes

September 9, 2015

It seems that Caitlyn Jenner has had the last laugh – and isn't at all offended by the Halloween costumes that were inspired by her Vanity Fair cover shoot. Despite the outrage that the costume sparked among the transgender community, Caitlyn has insisted that she is "in on the joke".

The fancy dress outfit is a replica of the white corset and underwear that Caitlyn wore for the photoshoot, and has sold on some sites for as much as £50.

A petition was even filed on change.org to ask retailers to stop selling the item, which also comes with a sash that reads "Call me Caitlyn".

"To be honest with you, I think it's great," said Caitlyn

"When you hear that there are companies out there that want to do Caitlyn Jenner costumes for Halloween from the Vanity Fair cover, are you in on the joke or do you think it's offensive?" Matt Lauer asked the 65-year-old star on the Today show.

"I'm in on the joke," replied Caitlyn. "I don't think it's offensive at all. I know the community does and they've gotten a lot of criticism for doing it."

She added: "To be honest with you, I think it's great."

"We could have done my own costume," Caitlyn joked. "I mean that was a serious bustier on the cover of Vanity Fair, you know?"

The 65-year-old star added: "I don't think it's offensive at all"

Fans of the former Olympian branded the Halloween costume "disgusting" when it appeared online, but one retailer Spirit Halloween defended the outfit, with a spokesperson for the company saying that the costume "celebrated" Caitlyn.

During the two-part interview Kris Jenner's ex also opened up about the recent car crash she was involved in, where her Cadillac SUV rear-ended another vehicle, causing a chain-reaction that resulted in the death of a 69-year-old woman.

"I remember it happening. That's about it," said Caitlyn. "A tragedy like this, you'll never get over it. You just learn to live with it the best you possibly can."
