Princess Victoria recycles mother Queen Silvia's dress from the 1970s

Princess Victoria of Sweden's latest fashion statement was a case of like mother, like daughter! The royal was recently spotted wearing a dress straight from her mother Queen Silvia's closet. The polka-dotted navy blue dress that Victoria stepped out in to visit the United Nations University in Tokyo last week had its first royal moment back in 1978.

A year after the future queen's birth in 1977, her mother Silvia made her own sartorial splash in the vintage frock. Nearly four decades later, based on photos from the event in Japan, it’s clear that the feminine ensemble still holds up today.

Victoria has always had a great sense of style and is a fan of breathing new life into recycled outfits. The Swedish royal has been spotted wearing different items from her closet over and over again, including an elegant Ralph Lauren tea-length dress on two separate engagements in 2015. She's also making sure her daughter Princess Estelle follows in her thrifty footsteps by dressing the young royal in some of her own childhood clothes, most notably a blue smock dress that Estelle showed off on Victoria’s 39th birthday in 2016.

Royal recycling is a common theme throughout the world’s monarchies, with Crown Princess Mary of Denmark and the Duchess of Cambridge taking pieces from their wardrobes out for numerous spins. Kate uses smart styling tricks like fresh accessories to make her familiar outfits look new again. She has been spotted recycling numerous coloured coats, nude pump shoes and patterned dresses.
