Velvet Vibes: HFM's favourite picks

The most decadent fabric of them all….

November 24, 2017

Velvet is one of the biggest autumn trends of the year, returning pointedly from its 2016 reign in the style stakes. It's very easy to associate it with Christmas (particularly if you invest in a bottle green) but bright velvet is very much in style and was all over the catwalks, and littered throughout some of our favourite high-street stores. Jewel hues work particularly well with accessories, which can brighten up any ensemble and give even the most casual attire a high-fashion edge. You don't even have to go into full-on velvet mode either; a subtle hint is sometimes all you need! For instance, jeans and a white tee can be jazzed up with a vibrant velvet blazer and loafers, or wear a tea dress with velvet detail, and add funky ankle boots for a pop of the lux material without going overboard. We have selected our top five velvet pieces, from shoes to cigarette pants, that will ensure you look at your most fabulous (and not like a sofa.)

It was love at first sight when we first spotted these sumptuous Federica Flats from Boden. The eye-catching fuchsia ensures they stand out, and we love the delicate straps and button detail. We envisage them with skinny jeans and a black cashmere sweater, for total relaxed glam.

We have always adored the pyjama cut- it's so easy to throw on, and you achieve the tailored look without appearing too formal. The notch collared number is in a beautiful dove grey and would basically compliment just about every neutral item with have in our wardrobe. It has a wide notch collar that is screaming for a vintage brooch.

Velvet Pyjama Suit Jacket, £299, Karen Millen

A skater dress is always a fail-safe item as it flatters all shapes. This luxurious, crimson design is such a rich hue and would look particularly sharp if you added gold statement disc earrings, and a chain belt. It has low back detail so the perfect attire for your work Christmas party.

Obviously velvet is having a moment, but so is pink, in particular blush. Tap into both trends with these totally chic, retro cigarette pants. Completely versatile, pair them with the matching blazer if you wanted that girl boss kinda look, or work it with a striped tee for the ultimate in cool gal style.

Bonded Velvet Trousers, £42, Topshop

Be still our beating hearts. This new, compact shoulder bag has been expertly designed in super luxe, berry tones, in a fabulous colour-block style. The gold hardware gives it an also magical finish- with the iconic logo making it instantly identifiable. Serious arm candy credentials.
