Royally approved wardrobe: Fashion brands the royals made famous

We round up the fashion brands the royals put on the map

December 27, 2017

When the British Royal Family are photographed in a particular item, it instantly becomes a top-selling item which becomes incredibly hard to get hold of. Many brands are worn once by a royal member and it propels their collection to world-wide fame. The Duchess of Cambridge arguably started the obtainable trend for royals wearing accessible pieces. Prince William's wife has long had a penchant for ZARA and put brand Issa London on the map as soon as she wore the brands' blue wrap dress as her engagement outfit in 2010. Prince Harry's fiancée Meghan Markle is currently having a similar effect, with all her outfits selling out within minutes. We have rounded up a collection of brands that are royally approved by Duchess Kate, Meghan Markle, and the wellington boot brand that the late Diana, Princess of Wales made a British staple…

Princess Diana almost stopped traffic in 1992 as she attended a charity dinner at the Serpentine Gallery in Hyde Park London, wearing a stunning bandeau cut dress by Greek designer Christina Stambolian. It became an instant hit all over the globe and is now one of the Princess's best-known fashion looks.

At the photocall for Prince William and Duchess Kate's engagement in 2010, the mother to Prince George and Princess Charlotte donned a blue wrap dress by Issa London, which cleverly matched her sapphire engagement ring. The dress sold out in 43 countries and is still adored to this very day.

When Meghan Markle posed with husband-to-be Prince Harry on 27 November announcing her engagement, the former Suits actress caused fashion chaos as she donned a simple white trench coat by Line the Label - a Canadian boutique brand. The website crashed, and the brand even re-named the coat in her honour.

Meghan Markle certainly knows her arm candy! On 1 December whilst out in Nottingham for her very first official public engagement with Prince Harry, she wore a smart burgundy handbag by little known Scottish brand Strathberry. The bag sold out in minutes and won’t be available again until 2018!

The late Diana, Princess of Wales single-handedly made wellington boots cool. Diana teamed her bottle green Hunter wellies with corduroy trousers and a vibrant jumper for a walk with then husband Prince Charles in 1981. The iconic boot brand has been a favourite of the royal family for many years, and actually received a Royal Warrant - meaning the brand are allowed to bear the coat of arms.

After Duchess Kate stepped out in a nude Reiss dress to meet the Obamas' in 2011, the dress became a huge hit and predictably sold out in minutes. Kate has constantly worn the mid-range high-street brand ever since, which shows her love for not only designer pieces, but also more affordable gems.
