Crown Princess Mary of Denmark and her sister-in-law Princess Marie were the ultimate stylish duo as they celebrated the start of 2018 together. The pair attended the traditional New Year's reception at Amalienborg Palace on 1 January, wearing their finest gowns and dazzling tiaras. Mary, 45, looked radiant in a satin red dress, which nipped in at the waist and featured a sweetheart neckline. The mother-of-four, who joined her husband Crown Prince Frederik, completed her glamorous look with an exquisite tiara and matching pair of diamond and ruby earrings.

Princess Marie, who arrived on the arm of her husband Princess Joachim, was just as stunning in a full-length white gown that featured a pristine overlay. She added a pop of colour with a gold clutch, a floral tiara and drop diamond earrings.

The Danish royals, including Queen Margrethe II, each wore the Order of the Elephant – a Danish order of chivalry that dates back to the 1400s and is considered Denmark's highest-ranked honour. It is exclusively used by royalty and heads of states.

The royal outing came just a few hours after Queen Margrethe gave her annual address to the nation, wishing everyone a happy new year and touching on the royal family's agenda for 2018. She also admitted that "in some ways, this has not been an easy year for me and my family" following her husband Prince Henrik's diagnosis of dementia.

She added: "We have been deeply touched by the sympathy and understanding extended to Prince Henrik by so very many people. We are very grateful for that. It makes everyday life easier for all of us. Life goes up and down. The most important thing is that we have people who are close to us." In September, the Danish palace confirmed that Henrik, 83, had been diagnosed with dementia and would be downscaling his public duties and engagements.
