Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Cambridge and the late Diana, Princess of Wales have something in common – they all wore the classic Prince of Wales check print during official engagements. The distinctive print - grey fabric adorned with bold black and white checks - was a huge trend in 2017, and looks set to continue well into this year. Bride-to-be Meghan, 36, donned a checked off-the-shoulder jacket by Theory, when she visited Cardiff Castle on 18 January. The former Suits actress wore the top with Hiut Denim skinny jeans, boots by Tabitha Simmons and a black scarf.

Prince Harry's fiancée isn’t the only fan of the plaid print – Duchess Kate was snapped in a beautiful coat by L.K. Bennett featuring the iconic design in December 2017, when she visited Manchester. The pregnant royal worked the statement coat into her stunning wardrobe perfectly, teaming the chic outwear item with a red dress by Goat.

Princess Diana was the very first royal to showcase this trend, however. Clearly ahead of the times, she donned an oversized blazer featuring the print in 1988, layering it over a crisp white roll-neck jumper, which was the epitome of 80s style, and carrying a Fendi monogrammed clutch bag.

It is clear that the traditional print has had a millennial revival, with a number of high-profile celebrities choosing to revise the print in a modern, contemporary way. Everyone from Cheryl to Joan Collins has worked the statement trend – and Holly Willoughby caused a fashion frenzy in 2017 when she wore a Topshop skirt teamed with a grey top that featured a dazzling, modern take on the retro design.
