Spice Girls' costume designer opens up about working with them

Costume designer Kate Carin worked with the famous girl band on the Spice World film

Costume designer Kate Carin thought of the Spice World movie as a fashion showcase rather than just a regular film. It's been 20 years since pop supergroup the Spice Girls ventured into film, with their movie '90s achieving cult status thanks to the clothes and cameos by the likes of Alan Cumming, Richard E. Grant, and Roger Moore. Recalling her time working on the film, Emmy winner Kate has only fond memories of collaborating with Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton, Geri Horner and Victoria Beckham.

"This was not a normal movie in the sense that you have a story you tell with costumes, it was more like a fashion showcase," she smiled to InStyle.com. "There were many changes - if you walked out of a shot wearing something, you may walk back in wearing something else. It was all part of the fun. This was aimed at young people, so everything was very vibrant and bright and catchy. The whole palette for the movie was the most delicious, mouth-watering bowl of fruit that you could ever get your hands on."

Although each bandmember, then known as Scary, Sporty, Baby, Ginger, and Posh, had already cultivated their own looks, Kate helped them take their signature styles to the next level. She remembers using a lot of Topshop clothes, but also creating made to measure stuff for each singer.

And out of all the girls, it was Geri who was most involved with the costumes. "Geri has a very big voice. She was very much the mother of the pack," she revealed. "If anybody was feeling unsure about something, Geri's opinion would be asked and given. She had such an energy about her; she was so refreshing."
